I'm looking for a painting of the Ship the "Agnes" which was built in New Brunswick in 1839. It was owned by H. Pooley, London. Captain was R. Davidson in 1842. Brought my relatives out from Liverpool. Any ideas?

I was named after my grandfather who lived most of his life in Lorneville just outside St John. I loved to go to Black Beach. The Irving Park is also a beautiful place. My wife and I also went to a hockey game. Would love to visit soon.

I checked out your site in hopes of finding a map of your city, and I was very disappointed. Like many other cities, the maps on your site are inadequate for those who are searching. A detailed street map along with a list of city streets would be helpful to tourists, researches and even locals. It is important to make sites as user friendly as possible by understanding what your patrons are looking for. Detailed maps are very important. Otherwise, keep up the good work.

Hi,
I lived in Saint John, NB for 8 years. I loved every moment of it. My plan is to move back within the next year or so. Hopefully I can find work. I do miss the friendly people and services. My favorite spot was Vito's Resturant. I sure do miss the ceasar chicken.

Years ago while I was visiting Cocos Island in the Galapagos, I came across a rock that had been stamped to read: JAs STEWAR_
ST JOHN NB
JULY th 21, 184_
10 Mos
(The blanks represent an unidentified letter/number. I took it that they remained on the island for 10 months, a picture is available). This rock has always fascinated me but I've been unable to locate any information on it. Is there anyone that can help me solve this mystery?
Thank you - Jodi

I wrote in the Quest book the other day and had a response. I made the comment that I did not know I was poor until I came to Ontario. I would like to apologise to any one who took this as a "downer". I was just repeating a comment that I heard from a fellow NB'r. I certainly would like to hear from any one who remembers me or who would just like to drop a line.
Good bye for now. Bob S.

ps: I did sign up on the message site, but I have trouble retrieving Saint John.

Greetings !!!
I came to Ontario when I was 12 (tuned 13 a few weeks later). I lived in the North End, went to Saint Peters Boys School. I lived on Rockland Road, Acadia Street, Chapel Street and High Street. I did not realize that we were poor until we came to Ontario. We were all in the same situation as a boy in Saint John. If any one knows my name - please E-Mail me !!! When I visit Saint John, I am always asking what there Moms maiden name was or what area they lived in. My (our) plan is to hopefully retired in Saint John - just a few more years until I am 60. Regards to all.

Hi out there , how is everyone today? My maiden name was mary ( bo ) Hodd and I grew up , well that is what they say happened, sometimes I wonder ha ha . Anyway I was born in Saint John, one of a large family. Still have a lot of family there and miss being there. My husband joined the Air Force and so we have been all over the world, but you know what they say "there is no place like home" and I believe it.I had to move away from home to realize the natural beauty that NB has. I lived there all my life and it took leaving to understand the incredible beauty of that area, as you can probably see I am home sick and wish that I could move back,,,oh well who knows what the future will bring ...take care of that beauty ,,,bo

I lived in Saint John from 1963 to 1966 when my father was transferred from Winnipeg, Manitoba, by his company, the Canada Life Assurance Company. He managed the Mortgage office in Saint John which at that time was situated on Union Street. I got my first job in Saint John, at the main branch of the Bank of Nova Scotia which was then located on Prince William Street. It was one of the best jobs I ever had! When I left Saint John in 1966, I moved back out west. I have now been living in Toronto since 1968. My husband and I plus another couple did a camping tour of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick four years ago and we camped our last night in Saint John before heading back to Toronto. What a big difference in your city in thirty years! With all the new buildings plus the Harbour Bridge, Sasint John really looked very different to me. Much more vibrant with a new spirit and excitement very much in evidence. I still correspond to a friend who lives in your city, his name is David Lockhart.

If anyone would email me the departure times or a site to go to or the 1-800 number, I certainly appreciate it. I love St.John's but the relatives are all in Nova Scotia. Hello! I have lived in Gardners Creek ,just east of Saint John on route 825 for 42 years. If any one is coming to visit our city I would strongly advise them to take the time to drive out along the coast of the beautiful Bay of Fundy and head towards St. Martins via route 825 .It has some of the most spectacular scenery that you will see while visiting Saint John. Many of our own residence do not know about this place, so check it out when you have some time for a quiet drive through the countryside. email me if you want more information about this area of Saint John. It is only about a 15 minute drive past the airport.

I am working on our family history which I believes starts in Saint John. My great grandfather was born in 1885 Charles C. Irving and had 12 other siblings and parents who lived here. It is that family I am hoping to find. He died in 1915 so my grandmother did not know anyone's names. If anyone should happen to know your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You, Sherri

I've been a frequent visitor to Saint John over the last 15 years as I have relatives in the city. It is probably one of the few cities I would ever bother to vacation in. It has a lot of attractions, a lot of good shopping, an extraordinary Bay (especially the Reversing Falls, which are fascinating), and some delightful people. I look forward to coming there again!!

Viewing your fine site makes me proud to have so many Loyalist ancestors who were part of your history and sleep in the old cemetery and Fernhill. Fosters, Kents, Taylors and Tituses helped build Saint John. I have not ever been there except in the many stories told by my mother. I wish I had.

Came across the site by accident. I worked as a DJ at CFBC from 1956-58 and regret haven't been back since. Guess the place has changed a great deal since then but I still have many fond memories of my time in Saint John. Hoping to one day return for a visit.

I spent half of my early years on Rockland Road. Will be passing through in July. I didn't realize how much I missed home until now. Sorry....in all my excitement about my next venture to Saint John in September I made an error. The ship we are taking from Portland does not go to Digby but rather to Yarmouth. We will then drive to Digby and take the ferry to Saint John. Also, forgot to mention our very favorite spot to have breakfast. It is a little restaurant, called Reggies, located on (I think) Germain St. (next to the City Market). It has been in business for many, many years and we feel like natives when we eat there. Great place!!

One of our favorite spots is the Cherry Brook Zoo...fabulous.

My great great grandparents, John and Agnes LEDINGHAM, emigrated from Scotland to St John, NB in 1873. One of their sons,my great grandfather, also John LEDINGHAM, was travelling the Mediterranean as a merchant mariner at the time. Upon returning home, he found his parents had emigrated. He decided to follow them, but ended up in St. John's, Newfoundland instead !

I have visited St John in the past, as my farther, lives just out side St John. This was about 4 years ago. I loved every minute. When I was there I experienced a boat ride on the reversing falls and it was an experience I will never forget. I just want to say the St John is one of the most picturesque Cities I have ever visited. Well done....

I had the pleasure of visiting your beautiful city back in 1985. My best friend is a life-long resident there and I was staying with her while there!! The weather wasn't very cooperative (rainy most of the time ... AND VERY FOGGY!!), but, I still got in quite a bit of sight-seeing!! I was especially fascinated by the "Reversing Falls Rapids"!! Never seen anything quite like them before!! Don't know about now, but, when I was there, there was a paper mill on the river by the Rapids that made the area smell like a metric ton of CABBAGE was being boiled! AWFUL!! :-) !! I hope to be able to go back to your city again sometime!! If I'm not mistaken, aren't Boston, MA (USA) and Saint John "sister cities"?? I live about 8 miles north of Boston... I thought I read that somewhere!!

There's another 'first' for Saint John, N.B.. In 1923 the first quadruplets were born in Saint John on Christmas Day. They were the first quadruplets born in North America and the British Commonwealth, and all survived. They were delivered at home by one doctor. As news of this miraculous event spread throughout the world reporters came from New York and other cities around the globe, all offering the parents money if the quads could travel for the world to see. Fortunately, the parents who were not rich, declined all offers, wanting the children to have a normal life. All 4 children lived a fairly long life and one still lives.

What a lot of memories!?!?! I grew up in Rothesay/St John and lived there until the age of 11. I then moved to England in 1991. My memories of Mispec, Rockwood Park, King's Square and most importantly the City Market (my father, Pete Luckett had a stall) all remain vivid and highly important to me. I still to this day, miss everyone and everything about St John - it's fantastic!! I returned for a visit in 1997 and will try again in the summer 2000.
I hope to see you all then!!!!

"why we our famous for are hospitality" Runners of the message board: you have erred in the wording of your web page. It is a ghastly error, and one of which I will not hold against the City of Saint John. I am preparing for a trip there tomorrow, and came upon your sight on my quest for info. I have yet to browse it, but felt compelled to inform you of your error. Maybe you have been meaning to fix it. Maybe, people have pointed it out before. Or, they noticed it but, were too forgiving to point it out. I think we Maritimers are all too forgiving. Is that what makes this such a beautiful place? If I really like your sight, I will return once have browsed, and share the experience. And look forward to it.

We are planning a trip to New Brunswick for at the end of August. Because we will be bringing along a 17 year old girl from Spain, I wanted to find some consise, well laid out web pages about your beautiful province that I could just print out and send to her to help inform her about our trip. Your site was absolutely perfect for this purpose. I especially like the fact that you can just click on the city you want to see. One suggestion though: do you think you could add St. Stephen to your list? There's almost nothing about it anywhere.

I just got back from traveling in New Brunswick & "lucked" into the newly established scenic drive that will eventually link up with the Bay of Fundy drive. You need to establish a link with the Bay of Fundy site, for it is much more well known than your area. St. Johns is a beautiful area & the scenic drive is one of the prettiest we encountered throughout Maine, Novia Scotia, & New Brunswick.

I lived in SJ for 10 years (from 1985-1995) and even after 4 years, I still get homesick every once in a while. The people in BC barely know that NB is a province, let alone where SJ is--kind of sad that we're a forgotten city, eh? Great site... I'll be back again soon...

Saint John is a place where my heart lies no matter where I go. It truly is misssed by me, from my family to my friends I had to leave behind. To those who are reading this comment I say to you"It still is the greatest city in the East". Look it up today and you'll see why.Filled with a rich heritage, warmth, and beautiful sights to see, epecially in the east side where I grew up. Go on the SJTransit bus tour, you'll be glad you did. Or perhaps endulge yourself in the fine shops of dwntown or local malls. Enjoy the warmth of hospitality SJ has to offer.I can't wait to return in July-August and see my family.See you soon.
