Hershey Park in Hershey, Pennsylvania, the home of Hershey's Chocolate--and now, the Great Bear rollercoaster, a torture device that would apparently make Torquemada (a head honcho of the Spanish Inquisition) jealous. The ride is almost three miles long and will "turn you upside down four times" (translation: "Bring plenty of Dramamine and wax paper bags"). Read all about the Great Bear and everything else the park has to offer and then take the Hershey PA link to learn about the rest of the town, too.
Walt Disney Pictures' Mulan The companion site for Disney's upcoming movie Mulan offers the usual fare: games, chats, making-of-the-movie info, and some extras like puzzles and e-mail postcards.
Official Peanuts Web The daily strip should be enough for most of you, but you'll find all kinds of stuff here: trivia, games, and coloring books; archives, timelines, and, of course, merchandise for the adults. Plus, you can jump to the official Web sites of many other popular strips from here, from Alley Oop to Warped.
Eye On The Jungle Africam has created a virtual game preserve. The site presents recent images from one of two cameras located near a watering hole on the Djuma Game Reserve in Mpumalanga, South Africa.
CTW'S Family Workshop The Children's Television Workshop, has put together a fun new site aimed at giving parents and kids something to do together online. While the kids enjoy tickling Elmo with their mouse, or creating their own storybooks, parents can check out some of CTW's 700 product picks or read the site's tips on safe surfing. A refreshing break from corporate-sponsored kid sites.
Stan Lee Media The site is something of a work in progress--an entertaining, bandwidth-gobbling work in progress, but a work in progress nonetheless. But if you're kind enough to register, Stan will let you know when he's ready to introduce his "next universe of super heroes." You don't want to miss THAT, do you?
OVERBOARD This Web soap opera, put together by PBS and Close to Home Online, chronicles the lives of a handful of teens and their struggles with drugs and alcohol. Part interactive comic strip and part after-school special, Overboard is updated weekly and might make a good spot for your young teen to visit. Along with each adventure, issues of drug addiction and peer pressure are addressed.
KIDS DOMAIN If your child is the one telling YOU how to download that Star Trek screen saver, he or she will enjoy the technology articles written for little ones in mind. The site also features kid-friendly downloads, articles, contests, and even a place for grown-ups too.
Ginger's Exotic WolfCam is an entirely wholesome, if often uneventful, Web site. Here, you can look in on the lives of Ginger's two wolves, Angus and Brianna. The image of their "campground" environment (they sleep in a tent) updates every 15 to 30 seconds. Our advice is to visit in the morning--the wolves are pretty scarce after noon. And don't forget to click the ads on the site, which help keep the wolves fed. Because the last thing the world needs is two more hungry wolves.
Headbone Zone you'll find games to play, chat areas to mob, e-cards to send, browser skins to snarf, prizes to win, advice to ignore, jokes to memorize, and penpals to meet. It's all free, though kids are encouraged to sign up so they can appear on high-score lists, join monitored chat rooms, get a free e-mail account, and win those prizes. We're thrilled to see that the Headbone will only let kids sign up after a parent calls or writes to say it's OK. Now that's privacy protection and kid safety.
Children's Television Workshop This Web site is a great resource for both parents and children. Kids will dive into all sorts of games and online activities without even realizing that they are learning. Parents can peruse interesting resources like the Sibling Rivalry Quiz, and The ABCs of Child Care: A Sesame Street Research Report. Bored of peek-a-boo? CTS has suggestions for similar but more inventive learning games. Of course, you can never underestimate the nostalgia value of a site like this. People who grew up watching Sesame Street can visit all their old friends in the Golden Grover Awards section. You can even email virtual Sesame Street greeting cards to your pals. As Snufflupagus would say, "Ohhhh, deeeeear!"
Virtual Cave Deep down, under, within, viewing splattermites and rimstone, even those familiar Stalactites and Stalagmites (do you remember?), the Virtual Cave opens the earth without requiring a headlamp or antistress medication. You can see photos and descriptions of those and other speleological wonders and see a map of showcaves around the U.S.
