Welcome to the Marco Polo Guestbook
Thank you for visiting our pages. Here are all our entries from 1999 to 2002,
hope you enjoy reading them as much as we have.

I first found out about the MARCO POLO at a family reunion held here in Tasmania. Our family tree comprising of over 3000 direct desendants of my G G Grandfather can be traced to the voyage to Australia in 1856. So it was with great interest that I contacted the MARCO POLO project in 1995 and was amazed by the amount of help and information that was supplied to me. I can not thank these people enough for their efforts in helping someone on the other side of the world that they do not know. It is my intention to build a floating scale model of the MARCO POLO of approx 10 feet long standing 8 feet high. This project has been delayed but is now under way again. I would love to be able to have my model along side the full size MARCO POLO II. How about it? Is the Canadian Government prepared to help see this combination become a reallity? I am quite happy for this to be passed on and I again thank Mr Barry Ogden and Mr James Stewart for all their help. Please pass my thanks to all the others involved. In reference to the kids game of Marco Polo played in swimming pools...
No one believes me, but the game Marco Polo started in our backyard pool. My little brother's nick name was 'Marco Polo'. One day in the early 60's we were teasing him in the pool. As we played tag, he would swim to catch us, but could not see because he kept his eyes closed. We started to yell Marco Polo. To allow others to be 'it' we adopted the call 'Marco' to be answered with 'Polo. Years later while on vacation in Florida, we were amazed to hear kids playing the game at the hotel pool.

I have been researching my family history and recently discovered that my g.g. grand father travelled with his family on the Marco Polo to Australia from England in 1856. I have just found this site and it looks like a fantastic resource for finding out info about the journey to Australia. If anyone would liek to share info they have about the trip in 1856 please feel free to email me. It will be greatly appreciated.

I am the great grand daughter of Captain James Cook and I thoroughly enjoyed my walk into his life and that of the Marco Polo. I am going to visit Newfoundland next year and I will search for additional information. I am named after his daughter Elizabeth...she lived to be 94 but she was only 10 when Captain Clarke passed away. She would have been proud to see that her father had been remembered so fondly and respectfully.

I enjoyed my visit to your website; and, I was very surprised to see the picture of "Marco Polo anchor" at http://new-brunswick.net/marcopolo/images/museum3.jpg because about 20 years ago, I purchased an "almost identical anchor" from an old scrap-iron dealer who was passing through Monroe, Louisiana.

My family arrived in Australia on the Marco Polo on 12th January 1863. For some time now I've been looking for a model of the ship that I could purchase to build. Does anyone know if one exists?

Apparently our street was named after this ship! I've wondered for years how a suburban street in Essendon, Australia could have got a name like Marco Polo Street in amongst all the old time anglo saxon type names. I saw a book at the local Historical Society which suggested the origin. I'm very excited. -

I must say I would like to see some more up to date information on the status of the project today in 2003. Seems most of the stuff here is 2000 or earlier. If this project is still alive I would be interested in helping out, but only if a full floating replica is planned. I can see no point in spending so much time and money for a ship to sit on the land and rot like the Ocean Hawk II did. Build a Replica of the real thing, not some half ass kids play house. Look at Nova Scotia, they have the Bluenose and now they have the Hector. Think of the vandalism if it was land locked. 24hr. security? You should put some of the pertainenet issues, questions and answers on here. Sorry for the rant.

In 1983 for the Royal Visit, my dad, Rodney Mackay did a painting of the Marco Polo, which last I saw, was hanging in the hallway lobby area of the Saint John Trade and Convention centre. He also did a painting of the Spencer (to honour Lady Diana Spencer's family) as well as a series of histiorical mural panels that hung in the centre of the shopping mall area, and a huge mural of the Loyalists arriving. The mural of the Loyalists used our family and many of my dads friends and others who were working on the project as the models. There was an article in the paper with a picture of my dad and my sister when the mural was very near to completion. I have a copy if any one is interested. My father is now living in St Stephen, still painting, researching and writing.

This is a follow-up to my message yesterday when I asked whether anyone knows anything of J.M. Whelan. J.M. Whelan was the author of that letter back home to Ireland following his 1852 voyage to Australia aboard the Marco Polo. I would like to make contact with any descendants.

Very nice work, and an ambitious project. Especially interesting since I have a keen interest in both maritime history and my Buote relatives and ancestors in the Canadian Maritimes. Lucy Maud Montgomery's essay mentions Peter Buote as dying in the wreck. I'd love to hear from anyone who knows more about him, is he really listed in the ships compliment, who were his parents, etc. Thanks for sharing your wealth of information.

In a recent NB Reader article Grant Kerr stated how the Marco Polo could be claimed by three cities - Saint John, Liverpool, and Melbourne. Has anyone thought to use this city sisterhood to an advantage in having a replica built. It could "summer" in both Saint John and Melbourne for one. Keep up the good work...some day I'd love to see the real thing built.

Hi (perhaps again)
I may have already sent this message but am unsure where it went.
I have just stumbled on to this site and read the messages of many people who have seen your primary site. I have not got there yet.
I am interested in the clipper ship "Hanover" which brought my greatgrandfather and his family to Australia in 1854. She was built in 1853 and belonged to George Marshall & Co. She came back to New Zealand in 1851/52 but I can't find anything after that. I am interested in her history (fate) and a picture, if possible. Can you or your colleagues help? Any assistance would be appreciated. As you will guess, I am a novice in this world.

I enjoyed your website very much. However, I did find one piece of information misleading. On the byline for the essay written by L.M. Montgomery, you state that she was 17 when she wrote the essay, and that it was just before she wrote "Anne of Green Gables." I'd like to clarify that this essay was originally published in the "Montreal Witness" in February 1891, when Montgomery was just 16. "Anne of Green Gables," however, was not written until 1908, when she was 34. As one who studies Montgomery's works in great depth, I would like to clarify this, as the 17 years between this essay and her first novel is hardly represented by such a statement as one coming "just before" the other.

I fear that if this is not the route taken, there will be much regret in the furture. I also wanted to note that an old friend from University used to tell me that his Grandmother who lived on the Island, found or had reminants of the ship on or in her wood pile.

This is great! My ggrandparents and family came over from Europe on the Marco Polo, probably after it had been sold in 1871. We have a picture of them with the name "Marco Polo" written on the back and the date 1871. Or maybe it was the last voyage before the sale. Can't find a manifest from that year, but I'm still looking. Thanks for this site. It is great.

My GGGrandfather sailed "between decks" on the Marco Polo to America from Bremen landing in NY 8 Aug 1867. The ship's passenger list was signed by Th. Krispen (sp?) Master of the Bark Marco Polo, 628 tons. Is this the same boat? I don't know if there would be more than one ship named the Marco Polo. I have strong evidence that, in addition to 5 family members with tickets, they had a stowaway with them. Are there any records, other than the passenger list, about that particular voyage? The captain's name was really hard to read and could have been Krispen/Minpen/Hinpen. Krispen seemed the most likely spelling. Thank you, and please let me know if I have the right Marco Polo.

I enjoyed your sight on the Marco Polo as I was researching your sight, as I have a minature ship in a bottle named the Marco Polo, the label on my ship in a bottle reads A Minature Ships In A Bottle Product, Made in England, Stockton.On.Forest York, the end of the ships bottle reads 1897, HAIG & HAIG, Scotland, and it has the number 2 on it, with a logo of some sort, the ships plaque reads "Marco Polo" and the ship in your articles, looks just like the ship in the bottle; they are the same I have a VHS tape I will send to you for a picture for your sight if you agree to return the VHS tape to me within 7 business days as I need it as I am trying to sell the ship in a bottle named the Marco Polo which is about 181/2" long it is beautiful. I have sent you my email address so you can email me back if you want me to send the VHS tape to you so you can copy for your web sight. Barb

As an ex- "herring-choker" (New Brunswicker)and Saint Johner and proud of it, it does my heart good to see a real passion taking hold of someone from the area. We've been too long in the shadow of our neighbours. We have a rich heritage and shouldn;t be so reserved so as to forget this. Stand up an yell it to the rooftops! We started the country and we'll always contribute. Coming from a long line of ship builders and seamen from Grand Manan and Saint John, I and my ancestors salute you and hope you keep finding the inspiration to carry on your fine work.

James Nicol Forbes was my great-great-grandfather. It is so interesting to read of his exploits. I have a photograph of my great-grandmother who was born at sea. They were present when Queen Victoria officially opened the Port of Manchester. Thankyou for all the detail on your website.

Did anyone consider building the Marco Polo from Ferrocement? I realize that it is not a reproduction per se but it could still be built according to the true dimensions. Could be cheaper and last longer. Also volunteer labour would be available. With drydock not being too busy perhaps it could be built there. Worth studying anyway.

It's to bad the Federal gov't has said no to your request for funding via the millennium fund. Hopefully they will change their minds as this project is the most deserving of all the projects put forth for funding.

I would do anything to sail on the Marco Polo. I have seen these ships under sail and they are truly magnificent. I am a native Saint Johner - south end. I left in 1960 and have lived in the US, Australia, Brazil and 5 provinces of Canada. I wish to help with this project in any way I can. Researching information is a passion of mine. I am currently trying to locate LM Montgomery's career launching poem "The Wreck of the Marco Polo". I recall from my school days, an earlier poem by, I believe, Bliss Carman titled, I believe, "The Marco Polo" . I have read the account in "Wooden Ships Iron Men". There is limited information in this part of the world. I have viewed 2 fine video's on Her and your replication project. I feel proud and pleased with what you are doing. To think that out of smelly old Marsh Creek (at least when I was young) the Marco Polo was borne to set records and ply the seas proudly for the next three decades. Good Luck! Don't be afraid to ask. Sincerely, John

Have you done a study on building a concrete boat. You could get a lot of local labour. People could use the work. Its feasible. Making it out of wood is pretty much out if the question.Look at the problems and cost with the Bluenose. Steel would be expensive. Take a look at conrete.

Hello, barry:
I heard about your site on "weekend Mornings" on CBC and just had to pay you a visit. I am keenly interested in the project, as I am a born and bread Maritimer. Max ferguson used to feature the music and songs from the "Marcopolo suite" on his saturday morning program. I grew up listening to intriguing tales of the sea, particularly on a CBC program called "Harmony Harbour", which originated in Halifax. Many of the stories told of great hardship on the waters.

A very impressive site. One never knows when and where articles may be found with mention of the Saint John built ship the "MARCO POLO". Example, as a member of the "SHIPS IN BOTTLES ASSOCIATION Of AMERICA INC." I have recently received their 1999-2 issue of "THE BOTTLE SHIPWRIGHT", and yes to be found on page-11-is the name "MARCO POLO" along with a write up which states that a picture of her now graces a "CANADIAN STAMP".
