Several endangered
North Atlantic right whales are lingering in the Bay of Fundy, well be yond the
time they usually head for warmer waters for the winter, causing concern for
the Department of Fisher ies and Oceans. DFO has issued a
request to boaters and fishermen, who are heading into lobster season, to be
aware of the whales' unexpected presence and take the necessary precautions.
The whales typically feed in the Bay of Fundy during the
summer months and head for warmer waters and calving grounds off the southern
U.S. by early October. Experts estimate there are only
about 350 of them left. The leading causes of mortality
for the giant mammals are fishing gear entanglements and vessel strikes.
Canadian and U.S. agencies are monitoring the situation.
